Steven Richardson is a PhD student in the Sociology Department at Queen's University. He has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Master of Arts in Sociology from Carleton University. Under the supervision of Carlos Novas, his MA thesis provided a critique of conceptual understandings of users and non-users of technology through an exploration of undergraduate’s use/non-use of Facebook. Existing typologies of users/non-users were found to inadequately account for the full range of possible interactions with technology – including for instance use by proxy and periodic use. His current research focuses wearable technologies and the quantified self movement. He is particularly interested in how designers and users ‘tinker’ with these devices, as well as how anticipated and actual concerns (such as privacy) are articulated, aligned, and framed in ways that contribute to a generalized acceptance of wearable surveillance.
